About Morehouse College

Morehouse College is a private, all-male, historically black college located in Atlanta, which is the capital of the US state of Georgia, as well as the state's most populous city, having a population estimated at a number of more than 540 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census, fact which also makes it the 33rd largest city in USA. Due to the fact that Atlanta had more than 2,387,520 households, in 2008, in its metropolitan area, which is the ninth largest metropolitan area in the country, being inhabited by more than 5 and half million people, the city is also the eighth largest media market in the United States.

Morehouse traces its history back in 1867, when William Jefferson White founded the Atlanta Institute, only 2 years after the American Civil War, with the support of the Rev. Richard C. Coulter and Rev. Edmund Turney, to educate African American men in theology and education, being originally located in Springfield Baptist Church, the oldest independent black church in USA. The institution moved in 1879 to its own location and changed its name to Atlanta Baptist Seminary, later acquiering a 4-acre campus in downtown Atlanta. In 1906, Dr. John Hope led the institution's growth in enrollment and academic stature, the institution being then renamed Morehouse College, in honor of Henry L. Morehouse, corresponding secretary of the Northern Baptist Home Missions Society.

Today, Morehouse occupies a 61-acre campus and has an enrollment of approximately 3000 students, offering numerous educational programs in various fields of study, including over 26 majors, from which the students can choose, including ''the Morehouse College Honors Program which is a four-year comprehensive program providing special learning opportunities for students of outstanding intellectual ability, high motivation, and broad interests.'' Due to the high quality education provided, Morehouse has been highly ranked by various significant publications, over the years, including by Forbes magazine, which placed the college among 10 Great Schools for Networking, as well as by US News and World Report, which ranks Morehouse 68th among the Best Liberal Arts Colleges in the Nation for their students.

Athletics

Morehouse's athletic teams are known as the Tigersharks, who compete in NCAA Division II and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), in various sports, including in baseball, tennis, cross country, golf, football and track & field. The Tigersharks also competed in swimming, in which, between 1958 and 1976, the team has had 255 wins and only 25 losses, as well as over 15 SIAC championships, making it the winningest sports team in Morehouse history.
